What is Pharyngitis?

Pharyngitis means inflammation in the pharynx or the back of the throat. On examination, it is revealed as bright red regions with white patches that indicate an infection. The individual feels pain even while swallowing saliva or water.

Causes of Pharyngitis

Pharyngitis can occur in the below-mentioned conditions:-

  • Infections like measles, chicken pox, or even common cold can result in sore throat.
  • Dryness in the air: dry air takes the moisture out of the nasal and oral cavity, which can make the throat itchy, and it is more common during winters and seasonal changes.
  • Smoking: Smoking irritates the throat and can cause sore throat.
  • Stain in vocal cords: Due to talking loudly or screaming, your vocal chords can get strained and can result in Pharyngitis.
  • Allergies: some seasonal allergies can cause Pharyngitis, and it can also manifest due to some food allergies
  • Tumor or cyst in the throat: if a sore throat persists for a long time, then it can be a sign of cancer.

Ayurvedic Perspective of Dosha Involvement in Pharyngitis

According to Ayurveda, two main doshas are involved in Pharyngitis. There is an aggravation of pitta dosha, which produces symptoms like redness, burning sensation, tenderness, and pain. The vitiated kapha dosha produces symptoms like itching, inflammation, white patches over tonsils and hoarseness of voice.
